Supermarket Swap began as a mum’s mission to help her son
Supermarket Swap began with Nabula Brdar’s mission to help her young son. As a busy mother, navigating ingredient lists often meant overlooking the complex names and codes of additives and preservatives. A quick scan of sodium and sugar content was sometimes the only step taken. But Nabs’ journey started with a commitment to understand additives and preservatives better, guided by qualified health experts.
Awareness grew about the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) and how easily it can be exceeded due to a lack of ingredient list scrutiny. Reducing additives in her family’s diet was straightforward and swapping products for those with real, recognisable ingredients became a daily practice. Friends soon expressed interest in these swaps, leading to the creation of an lnstagram page to share these discoveries. The page’s engaging content attracted a large, like-minded following eager to make similar swaps and better choices.
Simplifying Healthy Ingredient Choices
Recognising that she wasn’t alone with the challenges of reading ingredient lists, Nabs made the decision to simplify the process through developing an app. The app, developed with the help of health professionals and a food scientist, provides clear information about additives and preservatives used in Australia. The Supermarket Swap App was designed to streamline the shopping experience, offering easy search options for additive-free products from major and Independent Australian retailers as well as an extensive database of food additives approved for use in Australia and New Zealand.
Since launch, the app has been further developed to include an recipe collection and meal planning tools to simplify the everyday task ot feeding a family plus detailed inforrnation on common food ingredients and the chemicals used in household and cleaning products so its impact reaches further than the kitchen.
The Supermarket Swap brand has been built and supported by an amazing team of professionals dedicated to promoting healthier choices. We have collaborated with a number of qualified professionals for research projects and app data.
